Sheffield Cathedral Description
The cathedral is located in the city centre in a pleasant open area surrounded by office buildings dating from the 19th century. The majority of the worship area is at ground floor level with ancillary hall and catering facilities at a lower ground floor level.
The radio fire alarm system was installed throughout the whole of the premises over a period of 3 weeks. The fire system design was prepared in conjunction with the contractor who assisted with a radio survey and other technical advice. Due to the size and height of the areas protected, the use of a radio-based system was perfectly suited to meet the design and cost parameters.
In addition, the installation of point detectors was rapidly completed due to the elimination of all interconnecting wiring preventing any disruption to normal daily activities. In addition to single point devices three optical beam detectors were specified to give additional protection in the Nave and adjoining Chapel. A 3-minute sounder delay is included in the system software to minimise possible disruption to services due to the use of incense.
This feature, when combined with the use of handheld pagers, provides the user with full safety cover without unnecessarily alarming worshipers and visitors.
